NFL – New England Patriots history

The New England Patriots are definitely a team that no one can take lightly.  They have had a lot of recent success, but things have been up and down for them just like any other team.  Let’s take a look at some of the franchise highs and lows this team has experienced over the years.

Professional football made it to New England in 1959.  The first season game was played at Boston University field and over 21,000 fans watched the Boston Patriots lose to the Denver Broncos 13-10 on April 1, 1960.  The 1963 season saw the Patriots move to the Fenway Park for home games, where they claimed their first division crown with a 7-6-1 record.  Even with this great season, they still lost the AFL title game to the San Diego Chargers.  Many stars emerged during this season which included: Gino Cappelletti, Jim Nance, Babe Parill, Nick Buoniconti, and Houston Antwine.

In 1970, after playing a decade in different fields for home games, the Patriots made

The Tampa Bay Rays Emerge Once Again on Satellite TV

A few years back, the little engine that could in Major League Baseball was the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. All youth and very little in the way of payroll, they were an exciting antidote to the typical powerhouses and actually supplanted the Yankees in the AL East. After a rough World Series exposed their youth, they spent 2009 in recovery mode. The 2010 version of the Tampa Rays (they lost the Devil, among other bad things) is making a major comeback on HD sports networks. Here are 5 things to watch.

1. B.J. Upton is back. Upton became one of the most feared players in the game with his 2008 campaign. Aggressive on the base paths, quick in the outfield and generally menacing at the plate, Upton intimidated wherever he went. In 2009, he regressed in a puzzling way and became a major disappointment for the young team. 2010 appears to be another big year for Upton, who just got finished

The Name of the Mascot

The Name of the Mascot

Shakespeare could wax poetic about ‘What’s in a Name?’ because he didn’t have to contend with sports mascots …

It’s the politically-correct issue in America that refuses to subside. I consider myself to be an enlightened cyberbeing, but I contend there are just some topics that blur the bigger picture of an ethically responsible society, and complaining that mascots can be degrading is near the top of the list.

A quick check of Webster’s Twentieth Century Unabridged Dictionary defines ‘mascot’ as ‘any person, animal or thing supposed to bring good luck by being present.’ So, it would seem that a team mascot is an honorable title. Most mascots in American sports had their origins in the early 1900s. Back then, teams fumbled around with quaint monickers until they gradually realized the tremendous marketing value they carried. The New York Highlanders became the more regionally-identifiable Yankees, for instance, and the Chicago Cubs took their

The wonderful and great team is none other than The Boston Red Sox

The wonderful and great team is none other than The Boston Red Sox

The wonderful and great team is none other than The Boston Red Sox, one of baseball’s most storied franchises with some of the game’s greatest hitters. Originating in 1901 as the Boston Americans, the Red Sox have a 110-year history with at least 800 runs scored in 28 seasons. The 28 players have hit at least 100 home runs with Boston with Ted Williams topping the Red Sox’s all-time home run leaders. Most seasons grading the Red Sox would engage the starting nine, a couple of bench players, six starting pitchers and maybe 4-5 bullpen guys. With all the injuries the team have been forced to endure, however, grading the team has become a little more complex. The Yankees arch rivals, the Boston Red Sox put away their differences with the Bombers/Evil Empire in order to pay tribute to late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. The Red Sox held a moment of silence for The Boss and late Yankees public address announcer Bob Sheppard before their game against the Texas Rangers.

Angels-Red Sox Preview
Little has come easily for the Boston Red Sox in 2010, except when they’ve played the Los Angeles Angels.

The Red Sox seek to complete a sweep of their 10-game season series with the Angels when the teams conclude a three-game set Thursday night at Fenway Park.

Forced to field a makeshift lineup for much of the season due to a spate of injuries, Boston (69-52) hasn’t won more than three straight games since June and trails AL East co-leaders New York and Tampa Bay by 5 1/2 games, with the runner-up likely to earn the wild card.

Mariners-Red Sox Preview
Facing the Seattle Mariners usually seems to bring out the best in John Lackey.

The Boston right-hander looks to continue his recent success over the Mariners and help the Red Sox to a third straight victory Monday night at Fenway Park.

Lackey (11-7, 4.62 ERA) is 12-9 with a 3.70 ERA in 26 career starts versus Seattle, all but one coming while with the Los Angeles Angels. He’s been even better the last few years, going 7-1 with a 1.89 ERA over a nine-start stretch against the Mariners.

Match Details:
BOSTON (AP) — Johnny Damon won’t be playing left field for the Red Sox in Boston’s longshot bid for a playoff spot.

Expect to see a group of far less accomplished outfielders — Daniel Nava, Bill Hall, Darnell McDonald and Ryan Kalish — sharing that spot.

Damon rejected Boston’s waiver claim on him and said Tuesday he’s staying with the Detroit Tigers. Barring a move for another veteran, the Red Sox will go with what they
